Since his inauguration in January 2025, US President Trump, along with his team, has frequently said that he will annex Canada using economic force. Getting told that we would get annexed by force immediately set Canada up to reject that idea.

Since Feb 22, 2022, we all watched Russia openly attempt to 'annex' Ukraine and/or parts thereof. We know that there's a principle that sovereign borders should not be redrawn through force, and we used to know America to be the country which believed in that principle. We never thought a sitting US president would take the idea of annexing territory through force, contrary to the principle not to do that, and turn it on Canada. So let us pretend that the idea were presented in a more polite way, as an invitation to consider annexation. By considering several options, we can see, if the annexation does not happen, or if it happens willingly, in only those two scenarios we have a chance to strengthen Western alliances and weaken the positions of countries that might wish us to fail.
